Construction has commenced on a new purpose-built facility in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Cygnet Hospital Sherwood is a new state-of-the-art hospital designed to support both male and female patients struggling with mental health issues.

Operated by Cygnet Health Care, one the leading independent mental health care providers in the United Kingdom today, Cygnet Hospital Sherwood will create more than 100 new jobs in the local area, attracting further investment from Cygnet in the local economy. Cygnet Hospital Sherwood will draw on local resources during the construction phase, as well as day-to-day operational supplies once it is up and running.

Located in Mansfield’s Rainworth village, the 44-bed hospital will be an important extension to the existing Cygnet Health Care facility on Rufford Colliery Lane, providing a sanctuary for people facing mental health problems and offering a safe, supportive environment in which to recover.

Construction of the hospital commenced in the summer of 2022, and it is predicted to open to patients by the end of 2023. Dr Tony Romero, Cygnet Health Care CEO, joined the construction team in Rainworth for the official ground-breaking ceremony. He said it was Cygnet Health Care’s priority to ensure those suffering with their mental health get the very best support. Dr Romero explained that the new hospital would complement the range of mental health services already delivered by Cygnet Health Care in the area, adding that the organisation was delighted that it would soon be able to support more people in need of help.

Currently, Cygnet Sherwood House and Cygnet Sherwood Lodge operate from the site. While Cygnet Sherwood Lodge supports men with complex needs and learning difficulties, Cygnet Sherwood House is a specialist, high-dependency inpatient rehabilitation facility for men.

Cygnet Hospital Sherwood has been specially designed with wellness in mind, providing a safe and comfortable environment to promote the successful recovery of patients. Facilities will include a garden, ensuite bedrooms, a gym, therapy rooms, treatment rooms, a multi-faith room, a hair salon, a dining room, a communal lounge, meeting rooms, a quiet lounge and onsite car parking. The new facility will create a range of local job opportunities including health care professionals, nurses, clinicians, domestics, catering and administrative roles.

Cygnet Health Care partners with the NHS to deliver mental health care across a broad range of different settings across the United Kingdom today. The COVID-19 pandemic has seen a rise in individuals suffering with mental health issues and it is anticipated that Cygnet Hospital Sherwood will see continued high demand for its services.

As Dr Tony Romero explained, the pandemic had a huge impact on people’s mental health, with experts anticipating that another 500,000 people across the United Kingdom will experience mental health difficulties due to COVID-19. Dr Romero pointed out that this would not only affect their mind but also their physical health, families, relationships, job prospects and much more besides. With a current surge in demand for specialist mental heath services, Cygnet Health Care is working closely with the NHS to provide the best possible facilities and treatment to help people on their recovery journey.

Dr Tony Romero confirmed that the new, purpose-built hospital would meet the latest NHS specifications for improving mental health within a therapeutic environment, ensuring that patients throughout the East Midlands and Nottinghamshire will receive the care and treatment they need close to family and friends.
